Frequently asked questions.

Where are you located?

Equinox Therapy Services is currently offering equine-assisted psychotherapy out of Red Lion Farm in Gray, ME. The physical address is 11 Totten Rd, Gray, ME. Our mailing address can be found on the “Contact” page.

What diagnoses do you treat?

Equinox Therapy Services works with clients age 15+ experiencing PTSD or the impact of traumatic events which may be subclinical to a PTSD diagnosis. We also can help those facing distress or anxiety around end-of-life stages or life-limiting illnesses.

How do I become a client?

We accept both self-referrals and referrals placed by other providers. We work with people age 15+. To find out if we have openings or whether you might be a good fit for our program, please use the “Contact” page. Admission is not guaranteed.

Do you accept insurance? What is the cost?

We do not accept insurance at this time. Sessions are $150 for 50 minutes and must be paid at time of service. Sliding scale spots are sometimes available.

Can I stop by to check it out?

No, for the privacy of our clients we request that you do not drop in to visit. Sessions are by appointment only. If you are arriving for a session, please wait in your car. Meaghan will come greet you in the parking lot at the time of your session.

Do you operate in the winter or in inclement weather?

We operate rain-or-shine, year round, with some exceptions for extreme weather and temperatures.

Do you offer telehealth?

No, telehealth is only offered when Equinox Therapy Services closes due to inclement or extreme weather, or for client illness. Please discuss any questions about this policy and how it may apply to you with the clinician.

What should I wear for sessions?

Please wear close-toed shoes and clothing appropriate for the temperature/weather. When in doubt, dress in layers. It is best to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting muddy, dusty, or covered with horsehair. If you participate in riding as part of your treatment, please wear long pants, and whenever possible, boots with smooth soles and a small heel. You may provide your own ASTM/SEI approved horseback riding helmet, or one will be provided for you to use.

I don’t know anything about horses. Can I still participate?

Absolutely! Prior experience isn’t necessary. Any fears you may have about working with horses can provide a great place to begin in therapy.

Will I learn to ride?

Riding is a part of some clients’ treatment but not all. The movement of a horse’s walk is one way we can create bilateral stimulation which aids in the reprocessing of traumatic memories. Clients will only ride if it is indicated for their treatment and after they have built a relationship with the horse.

Can I participate if I am allergic to horses?

Please consult with your physician to discuss if you have any medical conditions or limitations that may prevent you from participating in equine-assisted psychotherapy.

Can I bring my pet/ESA?

No, in order to minimize distractions and for everyone’s safety, we ask that you do not bring any pets with you. Service animals (trained to mitigate a disability) are welcome if they are able to be safe around the horses.
